Three Tigers named girls’ hockey all-stars

Three members of the Division II finalist Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team were named Lake A Division All Stars, and one was recognized as the league’s Player of the Year.

Ten members of the girls’ basketball teams at Middlebury, Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Otter Valley union high schools have received postseason recognition.

Two Middlebury Union High School seniors have been selected to play in the 39th Rotary All-Star Hockey Classic this Saturday, March 22, at the Essex Skating Facility in Essex.

The fifth-seeded Tigers lost to No. 1 North Country in a Wednesday game at the Barre Auditorium.

In the end there was little to separate the Division II Middlebury and Hartford union high school girls’ hockey teams this winter.

The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey season came to an end on Friday, when visiting No. 9 Colchester pulled away late for a 5-1 victory over the No. 8 Tigers in a first-round Division II playoff game.

MUHS claimed 2nd place as a team not far behind perennial champion Mount Anthony; Vergennes senior Peyton Lavoie tapped as “Outstanding Wrestler” at the event.

Sometimes basketball games come down to the final seconds. Tuesday’s first-round Division II playoff game between No. 6 Middlebury and visiting No. 11 Spaulding turned out to be even closer — it was decided after the final horn sounded.

In the team’s only recent action, the Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey squad was blanked by host Spaulding on Feb. 19, 4-0.

The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team picked up two big wins last week and appears to have locked up no worse than a No. 3 seed for the upcoming Division II playoffs.
