Letter to the editor: Independence is important in oversight of police

I am writing to endorse Dave Silberman for High Bailiff. The role of High Bailiff is to provide oversight to the sheriff’s department, to ensure that office is not above the law. Such civilian oversight over law enforcement is so important for preventing any possible misconduct and abuse. If the High Bailiff is also a member of the law enforcement community, independent oversight is impossible.
