Soldiers on Mount Independence

Sep 7, 2023 | Photos of the Week

SCORES OF AMERICAN Revolutionary War buffs lodged at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell on Saturday and Sunday for the annual Soldiers Atop the Mount encampment. The event honored the soldiers who built and garrisoned Mount Independence in 1776-77 in the early years of our war for independence from Great Britain. The weekend included reenactors demonstrating 18th century life and skills, including several military skirmishes between folks playing separatists and folks playing loyalists. No actual blood was spilled, but several reenactors got to play dead for 15 minutes or more. Independent photos/Steve James
