Photos of the week: Jan. 30

Jan 30, 2025 | Photos of the Week

OBSERVING THE OTTER Creek Falls in Middlebury’s Frog Hollow this week, our photographer noted the subtle, painterly colors of the water reflecting the buildings and sunset contrasted with the texture of the water’s sudden transformation into an icy torrent as it plunges over the edge. THE THOUSANDS OF protesters, including some Addison County folks, who came to D.C. just before last week’s inauguration made their way in three big groups to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool for speeches from community leaders. Photo by Jim Mendell

BEFORE THE SKATERS could step onto the new-and-improved Vergennes ice rink in the Little City’s recreation area off East Street for a Jan. 18 ribbon-cutting ceremony, someone had to clear the snow off the surface. Vergennes Union Elementary School PE teacher Robyn Newton, left, and Vergennes resident Jeremy Holm were up to the task. They wrangled two shovels apiece and got the ice cleared and the fun began for scores of people who skated, played hockey and later warmed themselves by a fire. Independent photo/Steve James
