Letter to the editor: Thinking outside the Mt. School bond

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By David Brynn

The $29.5 million bond over 30 years to provide a major facelift to our well-built but 50-year old school is moving forward toward the March 6 Town Meeting Day vote. I wish it was a $12-15 million bond over 15 years focused on addressing the lighting, ventilation, heat distribution, science facilities, and fair universal access issues. The latter option would pass resoundingly.

Letter to the editor: Should coffee shop be a priority?

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By Daniel E. Preble

This community has homeless men freezing to death in the park, a shelter filled to capacity, many volunteers serving three free meals a day, food shelves having trouble keeping their shelves stocked, not to mention flooding disasters in Vermont, fires and mud slides in California, Puerto Rico wiped out (to name a few) and you start a “Go Fund ME” campaign for a coffee shop?

Too bad Studio 7, Amigos, Doria’s, Skihaus and 51 Main didn’t think of that.

Victory Nuovo: Civilization's dysfunction

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By Victor Nuovo

Rousseau’s “On the Social Contract” begins with this famous declaration: “Man is born free, and is everywhere in chains.”

The opening clause of this declaration expresses a fundamental principle of modern liberalism: every human being is, by nature, free. Yet, Rousseau observes, notwithstanding this native freedom every human being has become enslaved, and the cause of this enslavement is civilization.

Gregory Dennis: 'The Post' and the legacy of the free press

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By Gregory Dennis

“The Post,” Steven Spielberg’s latest melodrama, will lift many a heart. It recounts how the Washington Post defied the Nixon White House and a posse of prosecutors to report on the Pentagon Papers.

Editors and reporters will be among its biggest fans. As Manohla Dargis observed in her Times review, the film is about “a subject that’s dear to the heart of journalists — themselves!”

Community forum: Two takes on climate change

Posted on February 1, 2018 |
By Steve Maier

This week’s Community Forum is by Middlebury resident Steve Maier, Chair of the Greater Middlebury Climate Economy Initiative.

How can the greater Middlebury area become an even better place to visit, to live, to raise families, to grow businesses, and to grow old? What strategies can we deploy to make our region more affordable, resilient, inclusive, and vibrant, even in the face of climate changes and disruptions?

Letter to the editor: Thoughtful, phased-in minimum wage increases work

Posted on January 29, 2018 |
By Spence Putnam

In the guest editorial that appeared in the Jan. 15 edition of the Addison Independent Emerson Lynn claims that raising the minimum wage “would only hurt those it would be set up to help.” It’s hard to see why earning more money would hurt the beneficiaries of higher wages.

Letter to the editor: Unproductive 'tandem classrooms' lost in Mt. Abe plan

Posted on January 29, 2018 |
By Denise Dalton

What are tandem classrooms? An online search reveals this term is mostly used to describe an academic process of co-teaching. Tandem classrooms, as the term is used at Mt. Abraham, are a physical stacking of one classroom in front of another. The only way to reach the second classroom is by passing through the first. Tandem classrooms are also those that are separated by a retractable curtain/wall for flexibility in classroom size. Logistically speaking, neither of these solutions are conducive to focused learning.

Letter to the editor: All breeds of dog worthy of love

Posted on January 29, 2018 |
By Jessica Danyow

The recent Front Porch Forum postings about the dogs missing after the house fire in Middlebury have been a cause of sadness to me. First and foremost because we know now that all four dogs perished in the fire or shortly thereafter. My heart goes out to the family that has endured this loss. The loss of a home and the belongings in it is sad, but the loss of the love of your dogs is unspeakable.
