Junior Fishing Derby starts this weekend

VERGENNES — This year the annual Vergennes Junior Fishing Derby, which seeks to introduce young people to the benefits and enjoyment of fishing and to encourage them to share the sport with others, is going virtual. The event will begin on Saturday, June 26, and end Sunday, July 11.

Participants will have the opportunity to go fishing during those two weeks and submit a photo of their fish for a chance to win an award. This is a free event and open to all kids ages 3-15. It is split into two divisions: Division I – ages 3-7, and Division II – ages 8-15.

The boundaries range from Otter Creek falls in Vergennes to the mouth of the river. More specifics on rules and regulations, as well as registration information, is available at VergennesRec.org. Participants not already registered in the system will be required to create an account to show proof of age. Registration ends June 25 at 11:59 p.m.

All contestants have to physically catch a fish and photograph it to be entered. Email [email protected] with the participant’s name, a picture of the fish, and where the fish was caught. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on July 11.

One award will be given for each category per division. The awards will be a random drawing. Each participant is able to enter a maximum of two entries per category for their division. For each category that is entered, one entry will be put into a grand prize drawing (maximum of five entries, yellow perch are not eligible). The awards ceremony will be held on Aug. 7 at the Sam Fishman Memorial Pool.
