Shape Note singers get ready for a new season

MIDDLEBURY — Congregational and community singers have been practicing Sacred Harp or shape note singing for more than two centuries. The notation was introduced in late 18th century England and became a popular teaching device in American singing schools. Shapes were added to the note heads in written music as a simple way to help singers find pitches within major and minor scales.
In Addison County the Middlebury Shape Note singers have had a shape note singing group for years. Their 2019-2020 season resumes on Sunday afternoons beginning Sunday, Sept. 1, from 1-3 p.m. in the Mitchell Green Lounge at Middlebury College’s McCullough Student Center.
The group sings early American shape note tunes (like Amazing Grace) from the Sacred Harp Song Book. The music is traditional, a cappella, 4-part community harmony singing. There are no rehearsals and no performances. The group sings for the joy of the music. It’s free and open to all ages, all voices, and all levels of musical experience. Loaner books are available to members.
Anyone interested can learn more at the group’s Facebook page or at [email protected].
