VUHS runners grab gold at season opener

BURLINGTON — The Vergennes Union High School indoor track team opened its season this past Saturday by winning five Division II events at the University of Vermont.
Junior Ben Huston won at 1,000 and 3,000 meters, senior Julio Quiles claimed the 300, and junior Gabe Praamsma prevailed in the 1,500.
Huston and Praamsma also joined with seniors Erich Reitz and Luke Bergmans to win in the four-by-800-meter boys’ relay race.
Huston, Praamsma, senior Kai Williams and Reitz also swept the top four places in the 3,000.
The Commodores stood a good chance for another win in the boys’ 4×200, but were disqualified for a zone violation.
The VUHS team will compete again at UVM each of the next two Saturdays.
The complete results for the Commodores who competed this past weekend were:
• Boys’ 4×800: 1. VUHS, 9:02.64 (Reitz, Bergmans, Praamsma, Huston).
• Girls’ 55: 5. Sophomore Audrey Tembreull, 8.79.
• Boys’ 1,500: 1. Praamsma, 4:40.93; 3. Reitz, 4:48.18; 7. sophomore Christopher Therrien, 5:22.58; 10. Bergmans, 5:28.70.
• Boys’ 1,000: 1. Huston, 2:54.33; 3. Williams, 3:05.96.
• Girls’ 300: 3. Tembreull, 53.26.
• Boys’ 300: 1. Quiles, 39.14; 3. junior Jarret Muzzy, 41.06; 4. junior Xander DeBlois, 42.35.
• Boys’ 3,000: 1. Huston, 10:19.95; 2. Praamsma, 10:26.00; 3. Williams, 10:36.07; 4. Reitz, 10:53.05; 6. Therrien, 11:24.63; 8. Bergmans, 11:59.04.
