Burr & Burton stages comeback to edge Eagle girls

FAIR HAVEN — Burr & Burton on Saturday rallied to edge the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team, 43-42, in the opening round of Fair Haven’s annual holiday tournament. Both teams were making their season’s debut.
The Eagles led by 24-15 at the half and 39-35 after three periods, but were slowed by foul trouble in the late going — senior point guard Chloe Johnston, who led Mount Abe with 13 points, fouled out with five minutes to go.
The Bulldogs scored the winning hoop with 18 seconds left. Carol Herbert scored 22 points to spark their rally.
Abby Reen added 10 points for the Eagles, and freshman Maia Jensen hit two threes and scored eight in her first varsity action. Cami Masse (six rebounds), Grace Harvey (five boards, two assists and three steals), and Savannah Scrodin (two assists, three steals, three rebounds) also contributed for Mount Abe.
The Eagles were set to take on the undefeated host Slaters on Monday after the early holiday deadline for this edition of the Independent. Next up is a Friday game at U-32.
