MISSISQUOI — Two local cross country athletes took first place at Missisquoi on Saturday in their final races before the state championship meet.
Middlebury Union High School freshman Rosie Barry topped the small school varsity field — which she controlled from the second the 56-person pack left the start — finishing the course in 19:53.1, a personal record.
Including Barry, five MUHS runners on the girls’ team took top 10 spots — junior Louisa Orten (3, 20:22.3, PR), junior Meredith Carr-Perlow (6, 21:29.8, PR), sophomore Mia Rosen (8, 21:49.9, PR) and freshman Evelyn Fuller (10, 22:08.0, PR).
The Tigers took first place as a team (28 points). Rice was second (42 points) and Missisquoi finished third (82 points).
In the boys’ competition, Mount Abraham Union High School sophomore Del Guilmette led the 59-person boys’ pack with a 17:13:13 time. A runner from BFA Fairfax took second, and MUHS freshman Finn Ray placed third (17:45.7).
The Tiger boys placed third as a team (56 points), behind second place taker Richford (54 points) and winner BFA Fairfax (54 points). The top two teams’ places were decided by a tie-breaking rule.
The Eagle boys were sixth as a team (135 points). The Mount Abe girls’ team did not have enough runners to garner a collective score, and neither did the boys’ and girls’ teams from Vergennes Union High School.
However, the Commodores’ four runners on the boys’ team were some of the many local racers to post personal records that day.
