College indoor track opens season with home meet
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College indoor track and field teams opened their season on Saturday by hosting a six-team meet in which the Panther women (135 points) finished second and the Panther men (83) were fourth. The Franklin Pierce women (143) and men (147.5) swept the meet.
On the women’s side, Grace Desmond took top honors in the 60-meter hurdles (9.38 seconds) and the long jump (17’-1.5”). Leah Granger won the pole vault at 10’-0”, while Cady Barns prevailed in the triple jump (34’-7”).
Phoebe Colvin Oehmig paced the field in the 3,000-meter race in 11:09.98, and Middlebury closed out the meet by winning the 4×400-meter relay, with Audrey Grimes, Emma Hills, Julia Munz and Ava O’Mara posting a time of 4:16.31.
Also, Catherine Walker placed second in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.73 seconds, and Emily Ray was second in the 20-pound weight throw with a distance of 44’-2”.
The Panther men had a strong showing in the field events. In the high jump Jonathan Fisher set a school record, clearing the bar at 6’-4.75” to best the old mark that Taylor Shortsleeve set in 2015 by a half inch. Tim DeLorenzo finished second at 5’-10.75”.
Nathaniel Klein took second in the 35-pound weight throw at 47’-8.5” and was third in the shot put (44’-1.5”). Will Behm finished second in the pole vault at 12’-5.5”. At 500 meters, Michael Wasserstein finished third in 1:12.92.
