Boys’ basketball: Tigers, Mt. Abe players prevail

ADDISON COUNTY — As the local high school boys’ basketball season opened, Middlebury and Mount Abraham each split a pair of games, while Vergennes and Otter Valley came up short.
Vermont high school sports competitions at indoor venues have been on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gov. Scott lifted the ban on all but wrestling as of Friday, Feb. 12.

TIGERS
On Saturday the Tigers got a big game from sophomore Max Alberts in outlasting visiting Missisquoi, 67-63. Alberts scored 27 points and grabbed 10 boards. Senior Karic Riche contributed 13 points and five steals. Patrick Walker scored 25 to pace the T-Birds.
On Tuesday the Tigers gave visiting Division I Essex a battle before falling short, 59-53. The Hornets took a 22-11 lead after one period, and MUHS chipped away. But MUHS Coach John Howe said the Tigers could not overcome the Hornets’ size and edge on the boards.
Alberts scored 20; Riche contributed 11 points, five assists and two steals; and Gabe Dunn chipped in 10 points. Aiden Paquette scored 23 for Essex.

EAGLES
On Saturday Mount Abe finished strong in a game of runs to get past visiting Enosburg, 50-43. The Hornets went on a 22-11 surge to take a 43-40 fourth-quarter lead, but the Eagles put the clamps on them and countered with the game’s final 10 points to prevail.
Balanced scoring helped Mount Abe: Grayson Lyons (13 points) and Koby LaRose (seven) led the way.
On Tuesday visiting D-I BFA St. Albans played strong man defense to limit the Eagles in the Bobwhites’ 49-40 victory. Charlie Yates scored 12 to lead BFA.
Liam Oxford led the Eagles with a game-high 16 points, including five three-pointers, and Griffin Paradee added eight.

COMMODORES
Visiting North Country overwhelmed the Commodore boys on Saturday, 53-25. The Falcons bolted to a 10-0 lead and never looked back behind a balanced attack. Tyler Bergmans scored 10 of the VUHS points.
The Commodores’ Tuesday game at Missisquoi was called off.

SLATERS TOP OTTERS
On Monday visiting Fair Haven coasted past OV, 67-37. Kohlby Murray and Sawyer Ramey led the Slaters with 20 points and 18 points, respectively, while Alex Philo tossed in 17 for the Otters.
