Police Chief Hanley suffers heart attack

MIDDLEBURY —  Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley is recovering following a heart attack suffered during the morning of Friday, April 2.
During a brief email exchange with the Independent Monday morning, the chief said he also sustained a sprained knee and three broken toes during his collapse from the cardiac event — his second since helming Middlebury PD 30 years ago.
The chief said he underwent successful emergency surgery at University of Vermont Medical Center.
“The folks at UVM were fabulous, as was Middlebury Regional EMS and our two officers who were first responders,” Hanley said. “Folks should appreciate these responders who answer the call no matter time of day or night. They gave me superb care while reassuring and calming my wife.”
Ever stoic and quick with a quip, Hanley — a diehard New York sports fan — joked that the silver lining of his medical predicament has been his ability to watch, uninterrupted, several sporting events.
Hanley said he expects to return to his duties “in some form or fashion by April 19.”
Anyone wanting to send good wishes to Hanley can do so c/o Middlebury Police Department, 1 Lucius Shaw Lane, Middlebury, Vt., 05753.
