Vermont State Police Log: Bridport man cited for domestic assault

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police handed out several driving under the influence (DUI) citations in the past week.

But before that, they arrested a Bridport man and cited him for harming a housemate, and they allege that a New York man drove into a local restaurant.

On Sept. 19, at around a quarter after 11 a.m., troopers responded to a report of a family fight at a home on Hemenway Road in Bridport. After investigating, police allege that Claude Cousineau, 67, of Bridport assaulted a household member. State police took Cousineau into custody, transported him to the New Haven barracks, cited him for domestic assault and released him.

Separately, state police on Sept. 22 went to the Starry Night Café, located at 5371 US Route 7 in Ferrisburgh, at a few minutes before 4 a.m. after being advised of a suspicious vehicle near the front door of the building. Police looked into the situation and found that a pickup truck had backed into the Starry Night Café. They said the driver of the pickup,  Drew M. McCarthy, 39, of Mechanicville, N.Y., had a suspended driver’s license.

Police cited McCarthy for negligent driving and driving with a criminally suspended license.

The first DUI case came late on the night of Sept. 23 — 11:36 p.m., specifically — when a trooper pulled over a vehicle on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh and identified the driver as 41-year-old Nikola Kemp of Killeen, Texas. While interacting with Kemp, the trooper observed indicators of impairment, so he screened Kemp for drunk driving and ended up citing him for DUI.

In a separate incident the next day, Sept. 24, at a quarter after 3 p.m., troopers responded to Pomainville Road in Salisbury for a reported suspicious vehicle. Police found that the driver was Julio Matavaca-Ramirez, 27, of Waterbury. After screening him, they took Matavaca-Ramirez to the Vergennes Police Department for processing and cited him for DUI.
