Photos of the week: May 11

May 11, 2023 | Photos of the Week

DAN BRETT OF Whiting drives his “Cautionary Tail” bike in Saturday’s Human-Powered Parade in Bristol. A couple dozen families with children and others interested in parading around the village on wheeled vehicles — all without internal-combustion engines — gathered at the Recreation Park at 10 a.m. and processed through town. Brett’s dinosaur-themed vehicle uses a little humor to remind viewers to take climate change seriously. Independent photo/Steve James
THIS PAST SATURDAY saw beautiful springtime weather across most of the Green Mountain State. That was a good thing, because it was Green Up Day, which for more than half a century has seen Vermonters come out and clean up roadsides and natural areas. Here, Dan Beaupre tosses a couple bags of trash he cleared from the Painter Road area to Chad Kim — a Middlebury College senior and the town of Middlebury Green Up coordinator — on Green Up Day in Middlebury. IT’S NOT OFTEN that Blue Jays stop long enough for viewers to see the lovely patterns on their tail feathers. Thanks to a Weybridge resident, this photo captures them for all to see. Photo by Susan Humphrey
SIXTEEN HANNAFORD CAREER Center students participated in the recent SkillsUSA-Vermont state competition. THE FAMILY OF Bristol’s Joe Devall, formerly the long-time CEO of Co-operative Insurance Companies and a current member of the breakfast klatch known as the Old Farts Club, decided to throw a party to celebrate his completion of 90 years on this Earth. They thought they’d invite a few people to the Bristol American Legion for an intimate affair, but Joe kept inviting more and more people. On this past Saturday around 70 came out to give their best wishes to Joe, to share some stories and to honor Joe for the work he’s done in the community. As it turns out, the actual date of the anniversary of Joe’s birth is today, May 11. Wish Joe a Happy Birthday when you see him. Photo courtesy of Amy Springett

As you read in last week's Addy Indy, Addison Cent
As you read in last week's Addy Indy, Addison Central School District recently updated its K-5 school choice policy, making it easier for area students to transfer to other elementary schools in the district. Bridport Central, Cornwall Elementary, Mary Hogan Elementary, Salisbury Community and Weybridge Elementary all have a limited number of transfer slots available. Here’s what you need to know:

➡️ Transfer applications for the 2026-2027 school year are due by March 2.
➡️ The Superintendent's Office will hold a virtual meeting this Thursday, Feb. 5, at 5:30 p.m. and an in-person meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 8:30 a.m. at the Superintendent's Office in Middlebury to answer questions and help families fill out the transfer form.
➡️ ACSD elementary school principals are hosting open houses for families interested in transferring at the following dates and times: Mary Hogan - Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m, Salisbury Community - Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m., Cornwall Elementary - Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m.; Bridport Elementary - Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m., Weybridge Elementary - Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m.
➡️ Applications will be processed March 3-13. A lottery will be held if transfer requests exceed available slots.
➡️ Families will be notified of their new school or waitlist status by March 23. They must accept or decline the school placement by March 26.

For more information, see our recent coverage of the transfer policy, as well as ACSD’s transfer guide for families, at our link in bio. You can also contact Darcie Arensmeyer, Assistant to the Superintendent, at 802-382-1277 or darensmeyer@acsdvt.org.

Monkton Resident Adrienne Raphael has long worked
Monkton Resident Adrienne Raphael has long worked to support communities overseas through her work in the international development sector. Her work has more recently shifted to her home community of Monkton, where she’s working to convert this garage at 216 Monkton Ridge into a general store and coffee shop space expected to open sometime this year.

“I’m just really excited,” Raphael said of the project. “Monkton is such a vibrant community; we have such a strong sense of place here like many communities.”

After a dozen years of publishing Vermont Sports Magazine, Addison Press Inc. has sold the publication and its digital properties to Adirondack Sports & Fitness LLC of Clifton Park, N.Y.

Adirondack Sports & Fitness, owned by Darryl and Mona Caron, publishes Upstate Sports (formerly Adirondack Sports) magazine monthly, and hosts two large outdoor recreational sports and travel shows — the Summer Expo in March and the Winter Expo in October — in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The company has been around for 26 years.

“We’re happy Vermont Sports will continue to thrive under this new leadership,” said former owner and co-publisher Angelo Lynn. “It’s a good marriage to join the recreational activities of upstate New York with those of Vermont and New England.”
