Vergennes Police Log: Alleged thief filmed by store video camera

VERGENNES — Vergennes police worked with Middlebury police to cite a minor for allegedly twice walking out of the Maplefields convenience store on Main Street in the city, on April 16 and 17, while refusing to pay for goods he had taken off its shelves.

Police said the minor mostly grabbed snack items and was captured on the store’s video system, once flashing a peace sign at the camera. Because the minor was a Middlebury resident, police there cited him into Family Court on behalf of city police.

In other action between April 17 and 23, Vergennes police conducted eight patrols by cruiser, five traffic stops and a VIN inspection; responded to a 911 hang-up call; fingerprinted four job applicants; and also:

On April 17:

• Dealt with a minor who allegedly used a fake ID to try to purchase alcohol and tobacco at the Champlain Farms convenience store on Main Street. Police plan to issue court diversion paperwork to the youth when a family meeting can be arranged.

• At the request of a delivery person, checked on the welfare of a city resident. Police said she had been experiencing mental health issues, but had declined to meet with the Counseling Service of Addison County.

• Responded to a minor two-car accident in an Armory Lane parking lot.

On April 20:

• Responded to a minor two-car accident on West Main Street.

• Took a complaint from a neighbor of the fire department that its flag was making noise banging in the breeze; fire officials said they would take the flag down.

On April 21, served a relief-from-abuse order to a Maple Manor resident.

On April 21, helped Vermont State Police by pulling over on Main Street a driver suspected of exceeding 100 mph elsewhere in the county; see related report in the state police log in this edition.
