VERGENNES — Vergennes police on April 4 responded to a report of a dog bite on Panton Road that required medical attention. 

Police said the dog owner took responsibility and apologized for her rescue dog getting loose through an open door and biting a pedestrian on the knee. She confirmed the dog’s shots were up to date. 

The victim declined transport from the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, but a friend said she would take him for treatment, police said. 

Between April 4 and 9, Vergennes police conducted a significant number of patrols and assisted other agencies several times, including by evaluating an impaired driver for Vermont State Police and helping Middlebury police deal with a hoax call about an active shooter.

In those seven days, city police went on patrol in cruisers 10 times and on foot twice; conducted 19 traffic stops, not including five commercial vehicle inspections; performed a VIN inspection; fingerprinted eight job applicants; and also: 

On April 5 helped with a walk and bike to school event at Vergennes Union Elementary School. 

On April 6 performed five commercial vehicle inspections, uncovering in one stop two hours-of-operation violations.

On April 7 helped state police at the city station; a department Drug Recognition Expert determined an impaired driving suspect was allegedly driving under the influence of cannabis. 

On April 8:

• Handled a two-car accident at the intersection of Main Street and Monkton Road.

• After citizen reports were called in, responded to a one-car accident on Route 22A on behalf of state police. Local police learned the driver had left the scene and was walking north along the highway, and was having mental health issues. Charlotte Rescue took the driver to the UVM Medical Center.

On April 9 sent two officers to help Middlebury police and other agencies make sure the Middlebury College library was clear after a false report was called in of an active shooter in the building.
