Tap into business opportunities in your woods

VERMONT — Are you interested in exploring the business potential of your maple woods? UVM Extension is working with forest landowners, maple producers, and entrepreneurs to assess the economic and environmental benefits of sap enterprises.

Through one-on-one guidance, participants can evaluate carbon and economic assessment tools, develop startup budgets, and analyze production costs to determine the feasibility of starting a sap business. This program helps you balance forest health with profitability while exploring opportunities in the maple industry.

Some benefits of a maple sap business include:

• Lower barriers to entry and higher profitability; start-up costs about half the cost for a full sugaring operation.

• Strong demand for sap from an expanding maple products industry.

• Potential for economic incentives related to woodland management and forest carbon sequestration.

UVM Extension is recruiting Vermont participants to work with UVM Extension Maple Business one-on-one.

New funding in 2025 is limited to Vermont participants. If you are a maple sap producer, prospective producer, or a forest landowner you are invited to apply for an assessment. Extension Maple Business will work with you to assess the productive potential of your maple woods, create investment start-up budgets and perform cost of production analysis, to help you determine the feasibility of starting a sap operation.

If you would like to participate in this project or receive more information, contact Chris Lindgren, UVM Extension Forest Business Educator at [email protected] or 802-656-7583 or 800-281-6977.
