Want to be an extra in a movie? Now’s your chance

THE MAKERS OF the film “Down Below,” shown shooting a scene with an orchestra, are looking for extras to come to Town Hall Theater in fancy duds next Monday to appear in the last shot of the film.
Two veteran television editors are almost done with their first feature film, but they need one more scene to get it over the finish line. On Monday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m., Matt Valdez and Collin Davis will film a symphony standing ovation at Town Hall Theater — and they’re asking the Middlebury community to help make it happen.
The Emmy Award-winning editing team wrapped most of their shooting for “Down Below” last year, but during post-production realized they needed one additional scene showing an audience’s enthusiastic reaction to a classical music performance.
“We are hoping for a packed house that looks like opening night at the Met,” said Valdez. “This is your chance to dress to the nines and help us make some movie magic.”
Matt Valdez and Collin Davis, the writing and directing duo behind the film, are in Middlebury as part of the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, where they’re speaking on the panel “Inside the Edit: Shaping Indie Film” on Saturday morning, Aug. 23, at Crooked Ladle.
The community filming event starts with a cash bar at 5:30 p.m., followed by multiple takes of applause and standing ovations beginning at 7 p.m. Participants should dress as if attending a symphony concert. The evening ends around 9 p.m.
“Down Below” tells the story of Alex Logan, a classical composer who retreats to her family’s remote lake house to overcome creative block, only to discover mysterious sounds emanating from the water. The film explores themes of family secrets, artistic struggle, and confronting the past.
The soundtrack is composed by Grammy-Nominated Zach Robinson, known for his work on Netflix’s Cobra Kai series. The film represents the directing debut for Valdez and Davis, who have spent over a decade editing projects for networks including PBS, BBC, and Discovery.
Please register to attend at townhalltheater.org or call the box office Monday-Friday 12-5 p.m. at 802-382-9222. Extras should arrive by 6:30 p.m. to complete paperwork before filming begins.
