Police say one farmworker stabbed another in Panton

PANTON — A farmworker in Panton on Friday pleaded innocent to felony and misdemeanor assault charges arising from a stabbing at a Panton farm on Thursday evening.

Jose Armando Lopez Moreno, 22, of Panton made the plea to charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, and simple assault, a misdemeanor, when he was arraigned in Vermont Superior Court, Addison Criminal Division. Judge Robert Katims ordered Lopez Moreno held on $5,000 bail in addition to setting conditions of release that restrict his access to deadly weapons, any contact with the victim, and prohibited him from returning to the residence.

Troopers got a report that one farmworker had stabbed another at a farm at 4312 Jersey St. in Panton around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. Police said a Marcos Diaz Lopez, 23, of Panton sustained “serious but non-life-threatening injuries” after a fellow farmworker, Lopez Moreno, allegedly stabbed and slashed him with a broken bottle.

Police said the stabbing victim was flown to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington for treatment. Authorities at the scene found another person believed to have been involved in the incident who reported a head injury. That person was taken to UVMMC for evaluation, according to state police.

Members of VSP’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Field Force Division and Victim Services Unit are investigating. All parties connected to this incident are believed to be accounted for, and there’s no known threat to the public.

Detectives encourage anyone with information about this incident to call the New Haven barracks at 802-388-4919 or leave an anonymous tip online at vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.
