Vergennes Police Log: City police investigate burglaries

VERGENNES — Vergennes police are investigating a number of burglaries and attempted burglaries around the city last week; cash was stolen during two of them.

On Feb. 3 between $400 and $500 was taken from the Park Squeeze restaurant on Main Street by someone who gained entry to the building, a crime reported that morning.

Also on Feb. 3, police were told someone broke into the basement of the Champlain Farms convenience store, but that nothing was missing, and that an alarm sounded at the Lost Lantern business, but that no entry was gained there.

Two more events were reported on Feb. 6. Broderick Automotive on Meigs Road told police of the theft of around $100, while the owner of the Community Market not far away on Main Street informed police of an attempted theft in which the store’s alarm apparently scared off the would-be burglar or burglars.

City police believe the cases could be related and would welcome any tips, anonymous or not, at 802-877-2201.

Also between Feb. 3 and 9, Vergennes police conducted eight traffic stops and three cruiser patrols, processed three fingerprint requests, dealt with three false alarms, and:

On Feb. 3 responded to a one-car accident on Monkton Road.

On Feb. 4:

• Calmed a family fight at a First Street home and separated the parties for the evening.

• Checked a report of a suspicious vehicle in a South Water Street business parking lot and determined there was no problem.

• Heard a complaint from a Main Street resident about a truck running outside of her apartment for a long period.

On Feb. 6:

• Enforced the city’s winter parking ban.

• Began looking into an issue of a vehicle with no plates left in a reserved residential parking spot.

• Identified a suspect in a case of a fraudulent check written on a Hillside Acres account. Police said they plan on charging the individual at a later date in a case they described as ongoing.

• Took an online report of vehicles not stopping at the stop sign at the intersection of South Maple, South Water and Victory streets.

On Feb. 7 checked out a report of a suspicious vehicle on South Water Street and discovered it had a flat tire, and the operator had a friend coming to help.
