Middlebury Police Log: Two facing charges after break-in
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police arrested two former employees of the Subway Restaurant on Court Street after investigating a burglary report at that location on Jan. 15.
Police cited Haley M. Gorton, 28, of Middlebury and Amanda Smith, 38, of Bridport for burglary, grand larceny and unlawful trespass. Police alleged Gorton and Smith had recently been fired from Subway, but still had a key to the restaurant. Law enforcement officials said the pair were caught taking meat and condiments from the restaurant coolers.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Cited Laurent Lussier Jr., 56, of Middlebury for suspicion of driving under the influence, following a traffic stop at the intersection of Route 7 South and East Main Street on Jan. 13.
• Assisted a local resident in averting a potential phone scam on Jan. 13.
• Assisted a man who had been experiencing a mental health crisis in the Court Square area on Jan. 13.
• Helped document property damage after equipment had accidentally fallen off a bucket truck traveling on Bakery Lane on Jan. 13.
• Helped a stranded motorist on Court Street on Jan. 13.
• Received a report about a sick raccoon on Foote Street on Jan. 14.
• Responded to reports of suspicious activity in the Marble Works and Mary Hogan Drive areas on Jan. 14.
• Assisted with a juvenile issue at Mary Hogan Elementary School on Jan. 15.
• Investigated an alleged retail theft from the TJ Maxx store on Jan. 15.
• Enforced the community’s winter overnight parking ban downtown on Jan. 15, 19 and 20.
• Responded to a report of a tractor-trailer truck blocking traffic on Main Street on Jan. 16.
• Investigated a multiple-vehicle crash in the Jackson Lane neighborhood on Jan. 16. Police said that the driver of a pickup truck veered his vehicle off Pinewood Road and collided with a parked car, which in turn pushed into — and damaged — adjacent parked vehicles. Police detained the driver for suspicion of driving under the influence. Police hadn’t cited the driver as the Independent went to press.
• Responded to a noise complaint at 53 North Pleasant St. at around 10:45 p.m. on Jan. 17. Police said they warned the residents to turn their music down and keep the party inside their premises.
• Responded to a theft complaint at Hannaford Supermarket on Jan. 17.
• Cited Stephen Leonard, 74, of South Burlington for driving under the influence, after receiving a complaint about a vehicle parked in the middle of North Pleasant Street at around 7:25 p.m. on Jan. 17. Police said they measured Leonard’s blood-alcohol content at 0.102%; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.
• Took a stolen-wallet complaint on Jan. 17 and confirmed some of the victim’s credit cards had been fraudulently used at area stores.
• Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS on a medical call to the Court Square area on Jan. 17.
• Responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a Valley View Drive residence on Jan. 18.
• Checked the welfare of a person in the Washington Street area on Jan. 18.
• Checked on a report of a single-vehicle rollover accident at the intersection of East Main Street and North Branch Road on Jan. 18. Police said the driver had left the scene before they arrived.
• Responded to a noise complaint in the Valley View neighborhood on Jan. 19.
• Assisted in searching for a runaway juvenile in the Court Street Extension area on Jan. 19.
• Responded to a reported that a car had struck a pedestrian on Court Street on Jan. 19. Police reported no injuries to the pedestrian and minor damage to the vehicle.
• Helped Hinesburg police in their search for a runaway juvenile believed to be staying at a Middlebury address on Jan. 19. The juvenile wasn’t there.
