Midd police look into possible shots fired on Saturday
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are investigating an apparent shooting behind Hannaford Supermarket on Saturday; no injuries were reported.
Authorities stopped a vehicle that they thought might have been at the shooting, and which held six juveniles and an unnamed adult.
On Jan. 11, Middlebury police tracked down a vehicle near the Abbey Pond Trail that had allegedly been used by suspects in a recent shooting incident in St. Albans.
Middlebury Police Chief Jason Covey on Monday sent out a release saying that St. Albans police called their Middlebury counterparts at around 11:20 a.m. asking that they check around the Hannaford Supermarket for the vehicle in question. When on their way, Middlebury police said they received reports of gunfire behind the supermarket. Local police couldn’t find the vehicle (or any shooters) when they arrived, but said they were told the vehicle might have been driven to the Abbey Pond Road area.
Police found the vehicle traveling in that area, stopped it, and detained its seven occupants — one adult and seven juveniles.
They also found two firearms and “additional ballistics evidence” inside the vehicle.
Investigation revealed that one of the juveniles had previously been reported to Vermont State Police as a runaway and had stolen — from a family member — the vehicle involved in the incident, according to Middlebury police.
All six juveniles were released to the custody of family members or guardians, and the adult — who police haven’t named — was also released. Police said their investigation into the incident continues, in coordination with the St. Albans Police Department. MPD officers were assisted by the Vermont State Police, the Brandon police and Bristol police.
Chief Covey reported no injuries or damage in Middlebury area stemming from this incident. Information suggests shots may have also been fired in the East Middlebury area, according to police.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Middlebury police at 802-388-3191. The investigating officer is Ethan Jones.
