Middlebury Police Log: Rutland woman is cited for retail theft

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Alycin Smith, 24, of Rutland for retail theft, following an alleged incident at a Court Street location on Dec. 2.

In other action last week, Middlebury police enforced the community’s overnight winter parking ban downtown every night from Dec. 2 to 9, except for Friday and Saturday. Over that week, police also:

• Checked on the welfare of a Woodbridge Lane resident on Dec. 2.

• Assisted a local business with a person who was refusing to leave the store on Dec. 2.

• Responded, with Middlebury Regional EMS, to a report of an unresponsive woman at a Washington Street location on Dec. 2. Police said the woman was taken to Porter Hospital.

• Assisted with a “juvenile issue” in the downtown area on Dec. 2.

• Were informed on Dec. 2 that two bikes had been taken from Middlebury College campus.

• Informed a local woman on Dec. 3 about how she could obtain a temporary restraining order.

• Cautioned a local houseless person on Dec. 3 about keeping their aggressive dog under control while downtown.

• Checked on the welfare of a Valley View Drive resident on Dec. 3.

• Received a report that a vehicle had been vandalized while parked on Jayne Court on Dec. 3.

• Assisted a local resident who had been a victim of credit card fraud on Dec. 3.

• Were asked on Dec. 3 to issue a no-trespass order on a person who was no longer welcome at a North Pleasant Street address.

• Investigated a Dec. 4 report of a local juvenile receiving threats related to nude images.

• Responded to a report of an alleged road rage incident at the intersection of Elm and Seymour streets on Dec. 4.

• Responded to a trespassing complaint at a Route 7 South property on Dec. 4.

• Issued court diversion paperwork to a person who had allegedly stolen something from a Court Street business on Dec. 4.

• Assisted a driver whose vehicle had run out of gas on North Pleasant Street on Dec. 4.

• Passed out popcorn and police swag at the “Very Merry Middlebury” Midd Stroll event in the downtown on Dec. 5.

• Checked on the welfare of a patient who had left Porter Hospital on Dec. 5.

• Were informed that someone had stolen a checkbook from an unlocked vehicle parked off Exchange Street on Dec. 5.

• Responded to a reported theft from Hannaford supermarket on Dec. 5.

• Investigated a fraud/threatening complaint at a Case Street location on Dec. 5.

• Warned a juvenile who was seen driving dangerously in the Charles Avenue area on Dec. 6.

• Located a stolen vehicle that had been left in the Tractor Supply parking lot on Dec. 7.

• Cited Wayne N. Gorton, 72, for negligent driving, after he allegedly swerved into the path of a police cruiser on Washington Street on Dec. 7.

• Assisted a College Street business that was having problems with a former employee on Dec. 7.

• Encouraged an unwanted patron to leave a Seymour Street business on Dec. 8.

• Helped find a loose dog in the Weybridge Street area on Dec. 9.
