Letter to the editor: Father inveighs against ‘hatred, bigotry, or division’

I’m a dad. I’m a protector of my family and loved ones, and I can’t stand bullies. I strive to see all sides of an issue before forming an opinion. I’m neither a Republican nor a Democrat, though I tend to lean more toward Democratic values.

After witnessing Donald Trump’s convictions this year on multiple charges, I’m deeply disgusted by the continued support he receives from so many within the Republican Party. Despite his clear violations of the law and actions that go against the interests of the majority of Americans, many Republican leaders have chosen to stand by him. It’s been said across social media and other platforms that today’s Republican Party has become the Cult of Trump.

I have friends, family, and loved ones who identify as Republicans. To you, I implore: please take what I’ve said into account and try to view Trump through a different lens. I’ve made that effort myself, but time and again, the reality of who he is overwhelms any common sense. His constant displays of hatred, bigotry, and his divisive “us vs. them” mentality make it impossible for me to see him as anything other than a destructive force.

At my core, I’m a dad, a protector, and I detest bullies. My instincts as a father kick in when I think about the kind of world Donald Trump could shape. I want to protect my kids from the society his actions and rhetoric could create.

We have 20 days to decide the direction we want this country to take. In the coming days, there will be an overload of information — some true, some false — coming from all political perspectives. While it’s crucial to stay informed, when it’s time to vote, think about the future you want for this nation. I know I won’t choose hatred, bigotry, or division.

I will choose a path that moves us forward in a more positive light.
