Letter to the editor: Blame legislature for biz closures
The recent closures of Paris Farmers Union, Buxton’s Store, and others should serve as a reminder the challenges Vermont companies are facing. In a recent survey, business owners listed finding qualified employees and property taxes as their top concerns.
These issues have largely been ignored by our legislature, who continue to take a band aid approach to long-term spending problems rather than making Vermont more affordable to keep and attract workers.
As a young entrepreneur and college graduate, I understand my civic duty to pay taxes and the value of education. However, continuing to spend beyond the rate of inflation only raises the cost of doing business, negatively impacting our economy during a time when residents are already facing the highest rate of inflation in 40 years.
Our governor (who received 7 out of 10 votes last election) understands the challenges Vermonters are facing, but current legislative leadership has shown no ability to compromise on its own. Therefore, it is time to bring needed balance to Montpelier. Please join me in supporting local Republican candidates this election season.
