Vergennes Police Log: Police serve up sweet treats
VERGENNES — With financial backing from local donors and logistical support from lu*lu ice cream, Vergennes police this past Saturday worked a community outreach detail dishing out free ice cream to local kids and their families.
In what police called a well-attended event, four representatives of the force worked behind the counter on Sept. 14 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., scooping out the sweet stuff to dozens of young patrons.
The evening before, city police on Sept. 13 escorted the Vergennes Union High School Homecoming Parade through the city, with a cruiser leading the four floats representing the four high school classes, and one following behind.
In other action between Sept. 9 and 15, Vergennes police conducted nine patrols in cruisers and two on foot and 18 traffic stops, processed eight pre-employment fingerprint requests, responded to four false alarms, and also:
On Sept. 9:
• Responded to a minor two-car accident on Main Street.
• Checked the welfare of a city resident, who was found to be okay.
On Sept. 10:
• Met with school officials and family members regarding a juvenile issue.
• Took a report about the possible theft of a credit card from a Main Street resident.
• Calmed a dispute between some Armory Lane neighbors.
On Sept. 11:
• Took a report of a stolen wallet; later the complainant called back to say he’d found it in his basement.
• Attempted to serve a relief-from-abuse order but learned its subject was in Ludlow. City police referred the matter to police there.
• Were called about a suspicious person outside 45 Armory Lane and determined it was a resident’s relative.
On Sept. 12:
• Took a call from someone concerned that an unknown out-of-state caller was actually someone violating a relief-from-abuse order; police couldn’t determine if that was the case.
• Helped a woman with a child in need of services.
• Took a report from a Second Street resident of an attempted phone fraud/blackmail in which the caller asked for gift cards while threatening to reveal sensitive information if the complainant failed to comply.
• Responded to a minor two-car accident in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot.
• Looked into a report of a suspicious vehicle in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot.
On Sept. 13:
• Issued a no-trespass order to a local resident on behalf of a city-based nonprofit.
• Took a call from a sibling at VUHS who couldn’t find a younger brother; he was found shortly afterward attending the Homecoming Parade.
On Sept. 14:
• Began investigating an alleged road-rage incident in Vergennes and Woodman Hill involving two men allegedly arguing about the affections of one female. The case remains open. Police later that day began investigating one of the two males for possibly violating a restraining order.
• In a separate case, police cited Thomas Roussin, 43, of Vergennes, for violating a relief-from-abuse order. Police allege he contacted an individual via text, contrary to the order.
• Contacted the parents of a teenager at the Champlain Farms convenience store whose foot was bleeding.
On Sept. 15:
• Backed up Vermont State Police on two cases in Ferrisburgh. One was a call from a woman who claimed to have been locked in the trunk of a car; police described it as a mental health incident. The other was a traffic stop on Route 7.
• Heard from a First Street resident who believed a call from a rental center was suspicious.
