Vergennes Police Log: Tips from callers lead to sexual assault citations

VERGENNES — Vergennes police last week dealt with an alleged case of domestic assault that also included a charge of sexual assault, and in a separate case cited another individual for a sexual assault. In both cases a third party’s call sparked police involvement.

On Sept. 2 police cited Daniel Bushey, 37, of Vergennes for domestic assault, sexual assault and resisting arrest after going to a city home in response to a call from a relative of the alleged victim.

On Sept. 6 police cited Bronson Moultroup, 29, of Vergennes for an alleged sexual assault. The case first came to police’s attention when a friend of the alleged victim called police and said she was concerned that her friend might be the victim of abuse. Police then contacted the alleged victim with intentions of discussing a relief-from-abuse order, and eventually circumstances led to the citation.

In other action between Sept. 2 and 8, Vergennes police conducted 15 patrols by cruiser and two on foot, 15 traffic stops, and a property watch; processed seven pre-employment fingerprint requests; and:

On Sept. 2:

  • Joined Vermont State Police at a drunk-driving checkpoint in Ferrisburgh.
  • Went along with the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad to South Maple Street, where an elderly woman had tripped and fallen on the sidewalk; VARS took her to Porter Hospital.

On Sept. 3:

  • Dealt with a minor motor vehicle crash on West Main Street.
  • Investigated an allegation of a violation of a relief-from abuse order and determined no violation had occurred.

On Sept. 4:

  • Were informed a package had been delivered to the wrong apartment; the landlord handled it.
  • Took a report of a threatening phone scam from a resident. Police said it was safe to ignore and block calls demanding Bitcoin to prevent the release of damaging personal information.
  • Gave a courtesy ride to an individual hanging around a North Main Street business who was taking a break from walking from Bristol to Ferrisburgh and was struggling to complete the journey.

On Sept. 5:

  • After getting a complaint, asked construction workers on West Main Street to turn down music.
  • Served an abuse-prevention order to a Main Street resident.

On Sept. 6 cited Jeffrey O’Reilly, 61, for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, possession of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, and driving with a criminally suspended license.

On Sept. 7:

  • Counseled a homeless person who arrived in town on what help local social services could provide.
  • Determined a person reported to be acting suspiciously on Sunset Drive was probably a real estate appraiser.
