Vermont State Police Log: Rainstorm exacerbates cruiser crash

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police last week responded to a traffic accident in which a Bristol police cruiser went off the road during a rainstorm.

On June 10 at a few minutes before midnight, Bristol Police Officer Armin Nukic was on duty and driving northbound on Silver Street in Monkton during a period of heavy rain and flooding roadways. Nukic, 35, of South Burlington, came upon power lines and a pole that were down and blocking the roadway.

In his attempts to avoid colliding with the downed power lines, the cruiser went onto the shoulder of the northbound lane, which due to the heavy rain and flowing water gave way. The cruiser rolled approximately 30 feet down the embankment, troopers reported.

Officer Nukic got out of the vehicle, which sustained damage to the sides and roof. First responders took him to Porter Medical Center as a precaution and he was later released.

Vermont State Police were assisted by Bristol and Hinesburg police, Bristol Fire and Rescue, Charlotte Rescue, Green Mountain Power and Dupont’s Towing.

Meanwhile, state police are looking for the person who stole a Hancock man’s car last week. On July 8 at a little before 4:30 police received a report that a car belonging to Neil E. Gibbs, 56, of Hancock was stolen from the parking lot of Shaw’s Supermarket in Randolph. The car was described as a 2018 blue Subaru Legacy bearing a Vermont license plate reading “GIBBER,” as well as a 50th-anniversary edition badge.

The next day at a quarter to 5 p.m., troopers were dispatched to investigate a tip that the stolen Subaru was in the Mini Mart convenience store parking lot in Rochester. The car was gone when they got there, but police got a photo of the suspected thief from the store surveillance system.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Trooper Flores of the VSP Royalton Barracks at 802-234-9933 or submit an anonymous tip at vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.

In other recent activity, state police:

  • On July 7 at a quarter after 1 p.m. responded to a two-car crash on Route 22A at the intersection of Route 17 in Addison.

Police report that Sarah Toscano, 42, of Hinesburg was driving a 2011 Ford Edge westbound on Route 17. After stopping at the intersection, she proceeded to drive west across 22A and into the path of a southbound 2002 VW Jetta driven by Kyle Dow, 26, of Vermont. Police said Dow had the right of way.

The front of Toscano’s Ford struck the side of Dow’s VW and both vehicles came to rest in the intersection.

Toscano sustained suspected moderate injuries and Middlebury Regional EMS took her to UVM Medical Center. Dow and a passenger sustained minor injuries and were not taken to the hospital, police report.

The Addison Fire Department helped out at the scene.

  • On July 11 at around 12:30 p.m. looked into a report of a citizen dispute at a home in Panton. Troopers said they determined that Nicholas Pecor, 21, of Panton had caused pain and injury to a household member, and he had done it in the presence of child. Additionally, policer said Pecor, who had left before police arrived, was in violation of prior conditions of release by having contact with a prohibited person.

Vergennes police were alerted, and officers there found Pecor at approximately 7:30 p.m. in the Little City. Officers arrested Pecor and cited him for domestic assault, offense committed in the presence of a child and violation of conditions of release.
