Vergennes Police Log: Policer nab man with outstanding warrant

VERGENNES — While handing over a domestic assault suspect to Vermont State Police on July 11, Vergennes police ended up citing a Brandon man for driving with a criminally suspended license and processed him for an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in a Rutland court. That warrant stemmed from the man’s earlier failure to appear in court to answer to an earlier charge of driving with a suspended license, police said.

City police said VSP had alerted them to be on the lookout for the assault suspect, someone police said was known to them for earlier law enforcement involvement. A Vergennes officer then spotted that individual in a vehicle being driven on Main Street. As well as alerting state police to take the suspect into custody, the Vergennes officer soon learned that there was a warrant out for the driver, Austin Wedge, 24, of Brandon, for allegedly failing to appear on the earlier charge.

Police said the warrant instructed them to issue Wedge a new citation to appear in the court, and they issued that citation as well as a new one for driving with a criminally suspended license.

Vergennes police said state police processed the other individual’s case.

Other action for Vergennes police between July 1 and 14 included conducting 25 cruiser patrols, two foot patrols, 21 traffic stops, one property watch and three VIN inspections; serving two relief-from-abuse orders; dealing with two false alarms and a 911 hang-up call; processing three pre-employment fingerprint requests; handling three minor car accidents; and responding to two reports of dogs left in cars at Shaw’s Supermarket on hot days.

City police also:

  • On July 3 looked into the theft of change from an unlocked car on Victory Lane.
  • On July 5 cited Matthew Husk, 42, of Vergennes for violating conditions of release.
  • On July 9 responded to a report of a woman screaming on Walker Avenue. Police found a woman in pain and she refused help; police determined that she was safe.

On July 10:

  • Helped another agency by providing a department Drug Recognition Expert at the city station to evaluate a driving under the influence suspect.
  • Alerted the public works department that a tree had fallen on the road near the intersection of Canal and West streets.

On Sept. 14 cited Shane Grandusky, 42, of Salisbury for DUI and reckless endangerment after a report that he appeared not to be sober when he dropped off a child at a custody exchange.
