Mary Barrera Scott, 92, of Queensbury, N.Y.
QUEENSBURY N.Y. — Mary Barrera Scott, of Queensbury, N.Y., passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024, following a brief illness.
She was born on Nov. 18, 1932, in Middlebury, Vt., to Sicilian immigrants John and Grace (Alcaras) Barrera, who were the proud owners of Barrera’s Greenhouse on Seymore Street in Middlebury. Working alongside her parents and four other siblings, it is here where Mary began her lifelong love of flowers and gardening and where her strong family values, which she passed down to her own family, originated. In 1952 the Barrera family purchased a summer camp on Lake Dunmore in Vt, which, for the past 72 years, has been a gathering place for Mary’s immediate and extended family and the source of many of Mary’s happiest family memories.
Mary married the love of her life, James (Jim) W. Scott Sr., of Burlington, Vt., on April 30, 1960. She worked at Fitzgerald Realty in Glens Falls for nearly 20 years, where she took immense joy helping families settle into the area. Many of her clients would turn into lifelong friends. When her husband Jim became sick she retired early from real estate to care for her husband until his passing in October of 1995.
Cooking was her number one hobby, always making food to share with everybody she knew (always with the item noted and dated on a post-it note). Other hobbies and passions included gardening, being a member of the Our Lady of Annunciation Choir, Rosary Alter Society and Queensbury Central Ladies Auxiliary, and providing baked goods for the annual church craft show. She was also a member of the Adirondack Red Wings Booster Club, sparking her family’s love of hockey. She loved supporting her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all their interests.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was predeceased by her brothers and sister, Dr. Sam Barrera, Joseph Barrera, and Carmelina Hennigan.
Survivors include her children, Joyce (Rene) Pasco of Queensbury, N.Y., James W. Scott Jr. (Catharine) of Hershey, Pa., and Joanna (Timothy) Robinson of Queensbury, N.Y. She is also survived by grandchildren Nicholas (Laura) Pasco, Ashley Pasco (Lester Weller), Dylan (Maureen) Pasco, James W. Scott III, Elena (Steve) Bennett, Analisa (Matt) McMahon, Cassandra Spratt (Andrew Golden), Luke Spratt (Kara Dignum), Sean (Erica) Robinson, and Nick Robinson; and great-grandchildren Adeline Pasco, Easton Bapp, Colden and Sadie Pasco, James W. Scott IV, Alice Bennett, and Isaiah, Isabella, and Ezra Robinson. Additionally, Mary is survived by her brother, John (Liane) Barrera, brother-in-law, Gus (Julie) Scott, and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. at Regan Denny Stafford Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Road, Queensbury, NY 12804.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 am on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, 448 Aviation Road, Queensbury.
Special thanks and acknowledgements to Dr. Reeves and staff, and her kind and compassionate neighbors, and church family for their care and continued help.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Purrs and Paws Shelter or West Glens Falls EMS.
