Vergennes Police Log for Feb. 8

VERGENNES — Vergennes police handled two complaints about fraud on Jan. 30, one of which they referred to Vermont State Police.

The first call came in from an Addison resident concerned that her father had been a victim of fraud. Because that caller’s complaint fell under VSP jurisdiction, city police referred it to that agency.

The second call came from a city resident who told police information had been shared, including Social Security and bank account numbers as well as other personal data, with a fraudulent caller. Police advised the caller to notify the bank involved immediately and to contact the Vermont Attorney General’s office.

That office has a fraud hotline that can be reached by dialing 2-1-1 from a Vermont phone or 802-652-4636 from any phone. The office also has a consumer complaint number: 1-800-649-2424.

Law enforcement agencies advise citizens against sharing any information on the phone with any callers whose identities are not fully certain.

Also between Jan. 29 and Feb. 4, city police conducted eight cruiser patrols, two VIN inspections and six traffic stops; honored seven fingerprint requests; dealt with a 911 hang-up call; and:

On Jan. 29:

• Documented the first of four calls during the week from a Hillside Acres resident who is experiencing mental health issues, but refusing to get help.

• Alerted VSP to a 911 call alleging an assault at a Panton residence.

On Jan. 31:

• Went to 45 Armory Lane to look for a woman on behalf of Rutland police, were told the person had moved to Rutland, and passed the information along.

• Took an online report of a minor accident in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot.

• Backed up VSP at a Waltham traffic stop, and then at the city station helped troopers process the operator for driving under the influence of drugs.

On Feb. 1:

• Helped the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on a detail in Middlebury.

• While on a Governor’s Highway Safety Council patrol in Salisbury helped a motorist get into a locked car with a broken door handle.

On Feb. 2 were alerted by officials at the organization Addison Housing Rocks that they had obtained a no-trespass order banning an individual from the agency’s mobile home park on Panton Road.

On Feb. 4 went to Waltham to euthanize a deer that had been struck by a vehicle.
