Letter to the editor: Vt. public utilities need to up their clean energy game

The Vermont Public Utilities Commission could do so much more to advance clean energy and help the planet recover in time for our grandchildren to lead healthy lives.

I was horrified to experience our skies filled with thick smoke from the fires in Canada during a recent trip south via New York City and Washington, D.C. It will only get worse, so we must transition away from fossil fuels as soon as possible. So far, it has not happened in Vermont, but we do have lots of trees so it easily could.

The Inflation Reduction Act climate law is now phasing in money for clean energy and we should make it a non-partisan effort to address this emergency. Utilities have significant financial, political, and technological capital to move the needle on climate action, so we must let them know that we are watching!
