Fixed costs fuel Middlebury municipal budget increase

Middlebury officials have until Jan. 24 to finalize a draft fiscal year 2023-2024 municipal budget for voters to field on Town Meeting Day, but early signs point to a potential 8.5% spending hike — or a 7-cent bump in the town tax rate — just to cover increases in fixed costs that include rising wages, benefits and insurance rates.
