MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to what they’re calling are a hate-oriented incident involving vandalism to a patriotic flag display for veterans at Canon Park off Main Street on July 3.

Rotary Club officials said someone broke at least four of the display’s 73 plaques honoring Middlebury-area veterans. Each of the plaques — which includes information about a specific veteran — is accompanied by a flag, some of which the vandal(s) also damaged or uprooted.

Two American flags were ripped from their poles and stolen, according to Rotary officials.

The culprit(s) also spray painted a message that read, “F— your wars, nationalism is facism,” according to a Rotary official.

Vandals also ripped two flags off the Cross Street Bridge and threw them into the Otter Creek, according to that same official.

Middlebury police said they stood all the display flags back up, removed the spray-painted message, and notified the Rotary Club of the incident.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to reports of a distressed beaver on Main Street on June 28. Police guided the animal back into the Otter Creek, via Bakery Lane.

•  Received a report about a disoriented, elderly person outdoors in the Birchard Park area on June 28. Police suspected the man was being affected by the extreme heat of the afternoon. Middlebury Regional EMS (MREMS) took the man to Porter Hospital.

•  Investigated a report of a man driving erratically on Seymour Street Extension on June 28. Police determined the man was suffering a mental health episode, and MREMS connected him to the Counseling Service of Addison County (CSAC).

•  Assisted Vermont State Police with a suspicious man on Leland Road in Salisbury on June 28.

•  Calmed a domestic disturbance at the South Village Green apartments on June 29.

•  Gave a ride home to a drunken man who was not wanted at a Perkins Lane residence on June 29.

•  Returned to Porter Hospital an elderly dementia patient who left the facility against medical advice on June 29.

•  Responded to a report of a deer that had been hit by a vehicle on Route 7 South on June 30. Police said the deer was killed.

•  Received a complaint from a Sugarwood Court resident about a family member allegedly stealing property on June 30.

•  Served temporary restraining orders on individuals in the Court Street and Route 7 South areas on June 30.

•  Helped return escaped sheep to their pen off Munger Street on July 1.

•  Gave a ride home to a drunken man found lying on the ground at the Jayne Court housing complex on July 1.

•  Responded to a report of a suicidal woman who had overdosed on medications at a Court Street residence on July 1. Police received the report from the woman’s husband, who called from out of town. MREMS took the woman to Porter Hospital.

•  Responded to a report of a disoriented woman in the Buttolph Acres area on July 1. Officers said they were unable to find her.

•  Were informed on July 1 about damage to the perimeter fence at Middlebury State Airport of Munson Road.

•  Assisted CSAC with a resident who was having a “violent outburst” at a North Pleasant Street residence on July 2. Police said MREMS took the person to Porter Hospital to get help.

•  Received a report about juveniles pointing what were believed to be toy firearms toward the Middlebury State Airport on July 2.

•  Investigated the report of fireworks being shot off in the Jackson Lane area during the evening of July 3.

•  Assisted state police at the scene of a vehicle crash, with injuries, on the Leicester-Whiting Road on July 4.

•  Gave information on July 4 to a local resident about how to access mental health services.

•  Responded to a report on July 4 of a small fox that had allegedly been hit by a car on Route 30 on the Middlebury College campus. Police said they saw the animal walking into the forest.

•  Responded to a Court Square complaint of multiple prank calls on July 4. Police advised the complainant to have their number blocked.
