MIDDLEBURY — The undefeated and top-seeded Middlebury Union High School girls’ tennis team last week won twice at home to improve to 12-0 and advance to the Division II final, which will be played on Tuesday at 3 p.m. vs. visiting No. 3 Montpelier.

Meanwhile, the Tiger boys, the No. 4 seed in D-I, also won two playoff games to improve to 11-2. They advanced to a semifinal that will be played at undefeated top seed Burlington on Monday at 3 p.m.

The Tiger girls dispatched No. 8 Harwood (3-10) on Thursday, 6-1, before blanking No. 4 U-32 (8-5) on Saturday, 7-0. The Tigers defeated Montpelier, 4-3, on the road this spring, in their toughest match of the season. Montpelier ousted host No. 2 seed Burr & Burton on Saturday, according to Tiger coach Jill Dunn. The score was unavailable.

The Tiger boys coasted past No. 13 Colchester, 7-0, on Wednesday, dropping the Lakers to 2-11, before rallying by No. 12 South Burlington, 4-3 in dramatic fashion, in a Friday quarterfinal. The Wolves finished at 6-8 against a tough schedule.

The Tigers have not faced Burlington this spring. Coach Dan Comar said the Seahorses will be a challenge, but will at the very least set the bar for what the improving MUHS program hopes to attain in the coming years. And the victory over South Burlington also gives the team a boost moving forward, he said.

“This year is a success no matter what happens Monday,” Comar said, adding, “They were just so happy to be playing this year.”

TIGER BOYS

The Tiger boys faced high drama on Friday after losing the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles matches. But No. 4 singles player Aiden Chance and a newly formed No. 1 doubles team of Oliver Poduschnick and Brian Newton, stepping up from No. 2 doubles to fill in for Aiden Cole, who had an unbreakable family commitment, pulled out tight two-set wins.

That left the Tigers’ fate up to the No. 2 doubles team of seniors Karic Riche and Antonio Abdul Sater, a team that is also not a regular member of the ladder, and sophomore No. 5 singles player Abel Anderson.

Riche and Abdul Sater lost the first three games and then won 12 straight to prevail in straight sets. Then all eyes turned to Anderson, who lost the first set on a tiebreaker. But his play steadied in the second set, and he rolled to a 6-2 win before dominated the first-to-10-points tiebreaker to give the Tigers the 4-3 victory.

“He’s done that all year,” Comar said of Anderson. “That was the best opponent he’s played, so it took him a while to adjust to what it would take to win it. Then he bore down and took care of business. And he knew we were tied at three, and he said, ‘I got this.’”
