Book review: Wonder Walkers — by Micha Archer

(Nancy Paulsen Books)
Two children, in their house, and one inquires of the other, “Wonder walk?? which tells the reader, or listener, of this picture book, that a wonder walk is something they do with some frequency. Off they go, and on the walk they wonder about the sky and the earth and the trees, asking each other, or wondering aloud, for instance, “Are roots the plant’s toes?” and “Is fog the river’s blankets?” as they wander around their town, situated, happily, on both a river and the sea. Micha Archer’s incredibly refined and lively collages bring joy to the already joyous tone of the story, with rich colors and contrasting textures — the pages accompanying the “plant’s toes” suggests beautiful quilts of earth. She creates her own paper, working with stamps and tissue paper and the results are vivid and lush. Archer wrote and illustrated Ezra Jack Keats Award winner “Daniel Finds a Poem” and also “Daniel’s Good Day,” and she has illustrated many other picture books, including Patricia MacLachlan’s Prairie Days. With a message that is gentle and positive — that there is wonder in the natural world, that we can be present in these moments — this picture book would make a welcome addition to a child’s library.
