I’m writing in response to Dawn Griswold’s Jan. 14 letter to the editor in the Addison Independent. While I appreciate her willingness to engage with the 5-town community regarding the current proposal for the repurposing or closure of Beeman Elementary School, Lincoln Community School and Robinson Elementary School, I was troubled by her presentation of the proposal. Like so many families, my wife and I have spent many evenings engaged in the Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD) board meetings and community engagement discussions.
We have witnessed many questions and concerns regarding the proposal from community members and board members alike. It is particularly unsettling that a single board member would write publicly on behalf of the entire MAUSD Board, giving the false impression that the board was unanimous in its support of Superintendent Reen’s proposal.
To anyone following the process closely, it is quite clear that there is not consensus among the board members to date. Beyond this lack of consensus, the legality of the proposal remains in question, as many believe that the current plan put forth by Superintendent Reen violates Article 16 of the Articles of Agreement of MAUSD.
The process for deciding the future of elementary education in the 5-Towns is far from over. I encourage anyone that is interested in the issues to visit www.protecttownschools.info and to attend any future MAUSD board meetings and community engagement discussions.
