Vergennes Police Log: City police help with highway safety patrol

VERGENNES — While on special Governor’s Highway Safety Patrol duty in Ferrisburgh on Oct. 15, Vergennes police cited a Ferrisburgh resident for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Cited was Sandra L. Backstrom, 66. Police tested Backstrom after stopping her vehicle on Basin Harbor Road for allegedly crossing the center line. 
In other activity between Oct. 11 and 18, Vergennes police conducted 21 motorized patrols, four foot patrols and one property watch, and:
On Oct. 12:
•  Twice aided Vermont State Police with car accidents in Ferrisburgh, one involving three vehicles on Monkton Road and another in which a vehicle struck a deer on Hawkins Road. 
•  Returned a notebook found on Mountain View Lane to its owner.
•  Notified the animal control officer of a loose-dog complaint on Comfort Hill.
On Oct. 13:
•  Referred a fraud complaint from a Ferrisburgh resident to state police.
•  Took a report from a city resident about a scam involving a phony Publishers Clearing House award.
On Oct. 14:
•  Looked unsuccessfully for a man reported to have knocked on a Meadow Lane door after dark. 
•  Processed a city resident for possible DUI-drugs, marijuana, after a complaint about a suspicious vehicle on White Street.
On Oct. 15 checked the welfare of a Macdonough Drive resident, who police determined to be OK.
On Oct. 16:
•  Helped the Addison County Sheriff’s Department with an unruly driver at a Panton Road traffic stop.
•  Checked out a report of a driver acting oddly after backing into a pole in a Northlands Job Corps parking lot. Police and counselors determined he had a mental health issue, but was well enough to drive to seek further counseling. 
•  Dealt with two minor accidents in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot.
•  Helped a woman find her husband. Police said he was at Porter Hospital. 
On Oct. 17:
•  Helped resolve a dispute between a man and a woman about his belongings at the woman’s Hillside Drive apartment. The woman agreed to bring them to the police station for the man to pick up.
•  Helped to resolve issues surrounding a girl’s panic attack while being driven by her father to visit a friend. Police said she found a place to stay for the night.
