MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report of a swastika symbol that someone had scrawled, in chalk, in front of (the North Pleasant Street side of) the Congregational Church of Middlebury on June 5. Police informed the church pastor, and confirmed no other area places of worship had been similarly tagged with the symbol of hate and intolerance.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Assisted a homeless man in getting a hotel room on June 1.
•  Responded to a reported domestic disturbance on Jackson Lane on June 3. Police said a woman was taken to Porter Hospital to meet with mental health counselors.
•  Continued their investigation into a check fraud case at a Main Street business on June 4.
•  Responded to Jayne Court on June 4 for a report of a person refusing to exit a bedroom. Police said the person was taken to Porter Hospital for attempting self-harm.
•  Investigated a car break-in at the Abbey Pond trailhead during the afternoon of June 5.
•  Received a report of a possible assault in the North Pleasant Street area on June 5. Police were unable to find evidence of the alleged assault.
•  Conducted a welfare check on a man who was feeling ill in the Court Street area on June 5. Middlebury Regional EMS took the man to Porter Hospital.
•  Investigated a dispute between some East Main Street neighbors on June 5.
•  Received a report about a man in dark clothing walking along the side of College Street at around 10 p.m. in June 5. Police told the man to stop walking along the side of the road for his own safety and that of others.
•  Cited Randy E. Klinger, 35, of Ferrisburgh for suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, and possession of regulated drugs, following a traffic stop on Court Street on June 5.
•  Responded to a report of a tree and power lines blocking the roadway near the intersection of North Pleasant and Elm streets on June 6. Police said the state highway department assisted officers in removing the tree from the roadway.
•  Received a report on June 6 of a driver throwing trash out their window at a moving vehicle at the intersections of Routes 7 and 125. Police said the trash caused minor damage to the vehicle. The case is still under investigation.
•  Responded, with Middlebury firefighters, to a report of downed power lines on Munger Street on June 6
•  Responded to a car-versus-tree accident on Cobble Road on June 7 that sent the driver to Porter Hospital with non–life threatening injuries.
