Middlebury Police Log for June 4

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to the Middlebury Inn on May 30 a little after 9 p.m. on a report of a man who had collapsed and subsequently died. 
Police found the 29-year-old man unresponsive in his room, and began performing CPR on him. Police said the man, identified as Kraton J. Chaloux of Middlebury, was first taken to the Porter Hospital Emergency Department, and then to the University of Vermont Medical Center, for emergency treatment. Chaloux died at UVM Medical Center on Sunday, May 31, police report. 
Addison County State’s Attorney Dennis Wygmans has requested an autopsy in this case, which is still being investigated, police said.
The Middlebury Inn is one of three local hotels/motels that’s been housing homeless individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Responded to a report of goats running loose on Munger Street on May 25. Police contacted the animal owners, who returned the goats to their enclosure.
•  Cited Dylan Laplante, 22, homeless, for domestic assault following an investigation of a dispute at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel on May 25.
•  Investigated a complaint of a banging noise at a Court Street Extension apartment building on May 26. Police said a tenant had been installing an air conditioner.
•  Received a report on May 26 that a man had possibly been camping on the Bread Loaf Corp. property off Route 7 South. Police said the man had left upon their arrival.
•  Responded to a report of a woman walking in the middle of Route 7 South on May 27.
•  Responded to a domestic disturbance at an Ossie Road home on May 28.
•  Investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident on Route 7 South on May 28.
•  Checked on a woman who had spent the night at the Academy Street bus stop on May 28.
•  Responded to a domestic disturbance at an East Main Street home on May 28.
•  Assisted Vermont State Police in locating a vehicle that had fled the scene of a crash on Route 7 in New Haven on May 29.
•  Responded to a reported burglary at Canopy Alternatives on Route 7 South on May 29.  Police said multiple chainsaws were taken from an unsecured building. The investigation continues.
•  Received a report that a person “might be using narcotics in the bathroom” at the Maplefields store on Route 7 on May 29. Police said the person was gone upon their arrival.
•  Assisted a local resident who complained of being threatened through social media on May 29.
•  Conducted a welfare check on woman found sleeping at an Academy Street bus stop on May 30.
•  Helped a local person who had been receiving harassing phone calls in May 30.
•  Helped mediate a landlord-tenant issue on May 30.
•  Observed a peaceful protest on the Cross Street Bridge on May 30.
•  Removed an “aggressive” man from the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel on May 30.
•  Received a report that a local man had made threats of self-harm on May 30. Police believe the man may no longer be residing in Middlebury.
•  Investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident in The Centre parking lot off Court Street Extension on May 30.
•  Conducted a welfare check on a woman in the Court Square area on May 31.
•  Assisted what authorities described as an “agitated woman” who had been walking along Route 7 South on May 31.
