Bristol Fourth of July parade officially called off

BRISTOL — It’s official — Bristol’s wonderful Fourth of July parade and fireworks will not be held. The Bristol Fourth of July Committee was scheduled to meet Wednesday evening and, as reported by the Independent, the group decided to cancel this year’s event because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is the latest of many summer festivals and events in Addison County that have been called off.
On Friday morning the Bristol committee released the following statement:
With heavy (patriotic) hearts and deference to public health, the Bristol Fourth of July Committee has made the hard decision to cancel this year’s communal festivities. This includes the activities and fireworks at the Bristol Rec field on July 3rd and all events in and around the Bristol Green on July 4th – 5k race, outhouse races, parade, live music, and vendors. While we are tremendously disappointed to cancel this annual tradition, it would be unrealistic and irresponsible to attempt such a large public gathering in these conditions and it is in the best interest of the townspeople of Bristol, the residents of Addison County, and all of our visitors from further to take this precaution.
Thanks to all of our wonderful attendees, we are beyond grateful to be one of the most popular destinations in Vermont on the 4th. For decades, Bristol has hosted the oldest continually-run parade in the state and the beloved outhouse races, among many other top-notch events and activities. With an eye to the future, we are excited to preserve the tradition for generations to come.
On the note of the future, we humbly ask that you consider supporting the Bristol Fourth of July celebration at our annual chicken barbeque on Saturday, June 27th. The barbeque will take place at the Bristol American Legion and be conducted via drive-through pick-up. Serving starts at 1pm and continues until it’s all gone! Just pull up and we’ll take care of the rest. Your support will make our celebration that much better next year!
Just because the festivities are canceled does not mean that Independence Day is. The giant flag will still be flown over Main Street and the buntings hung on the gazebo. We encourage you to commemorate the day safely with your family and friends so that we can all come back to the Bristol Green in 2021 with even more to celebrate.
We look forward to seeing you on July 3rd and 4th, 2021!
