Middlebury Police Log: Police respond to hotel for several crimes
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police last week were called to the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel on Route 7 South to deal with several crime reports. The hotel has for the past two months accommodated area homeless persons in need of a place to stay due to the temporary closure of the Charter House Coalition’s warming shelter. That shelter closed in late March in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
First, on May 13, Middlebury officers assisted Addison County Sheriff’s Department officials with an intoxicated man at the hotel. The next day they responded to a report of a person on hotel grounds in violation of a no-trespass order.
On May 16, police responded to a report that a hotel guest had punched a Charter House Coalition worker. Police served the person a no-trespass order and took him to Porter Hospital for evaluation.
Also on May 16, Middlebury police cited Charles Nestor, 49, of St. Johnsbury for unlawful trespass and possession of stolen property on the hotel premises. Police said Nestor had previously been issued a no-trespass order for the hotel. He was lodged that evening at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility for lack of bail.
On May 17, police assisted hotel staff in evicting a man from the property due to disorderly conduct.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Responded to a report of a drunken man refusing to leave the McDonald’s restaurant property on May 11.
• Were informed of the theft of a “Private Road” sign from the Lower Foote Street area on May 11.
• Investigated a break-in at Mike’s Auto on Elm Street on May 11. Police said the culprit forced him or herself into the building. Police said they’re unsure if anything was taken. The investigation continues.
• Responded to a report of hay on fire in a truck on Route 7 South on May 11. Police said the fire was out upon their arrival.
• Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with an injured person in the Court Street area on May 12.
• Received a report about a drunken man in the Court Street Extension area on May 13. Police said Middlebury Regional EMS officials took the man to Porter Hospital for evaluation.
• Assisted a local person who had been receiving unwanted text messages on May 13.
• Received a May 13 call from a South Village Green resident who alleged a daughter had received the household’s federal stimulus money and hadn’t returned it.
• Located a missing juvenile on May 13 who had been reported missing earlier in the day.
• Received a report on May 14 about a man who had allegedly passed out in the “smoking hut” on the Hannaford Supermarket property. Police said the man had fallen asleep after stopping there to rest.
• Served a temporary restraining order on a local man on Court Street on May 15.
• Received a report about someone burning trash off Seymour Street on May 15.
• Assisted a Case Street resident who had threatened self-harm through social media posts on May 15.
• Cited Charles Nestor, 49, of St. Johnsbury for allegedly taking a purse from an unlocked vehicle parked at Walgreens Pharmacy off Court Street Extension on May 15. Police said a store video led them to cite Nestor for the offense. In addition to grand larceny, police cited Nestor for attempted assault with bodily fluids and violation of his conditions for release.
• Investigated a report on May 15 of young children left unattended in a vehicle parked in The Centre lot off Court Street Extension. Police found one of the children’s parents.
• Responded to a report on May 15 of a man upset about Hannaford Supermarket’s return policy. Police said the man, whom they described as “mildly intoxicated,” left the area.
• Investigated a reported domestic disturbance on Court Street Extension on May 16. Police said the dispute appeared to be verbal only.
• Received a report of two homeless persons loitering on the McDonald’s restaurant property for several hours on May 16. Police said the two people agreed to leave the area.
• Helped a local family properly dispose of unwanted medications on May 16.
• Encountered two men drinking alcohol at a picnic table on the Hannaford Supermarket property on May 16. Police said the men left the area.
• Assisted Vergennes police with a reported attempted stabbing at Hillside Acres on May 16. See Vergennes police log for more details.
• Responded to a domestic disturbance at a Jackson Lane home on May 17. Police served a temporary retraining order on a man involved in the incident.
• Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with a medical call at a Dewey Drive residence on May 17.
• Received a complaint about littering in the Weybridge Street area on May 17.
• Responded to a report of a man trying to break down a bedroom door in order get to a woman in a Court Street Extension home on May 17. Police said the man was treated for a minor injury at Porter Hospital, while the woman went to stay with a family member.
