VERGENNES — Vergennes police were busy enforcing traffic laws between March 2 and 8.
During those seven days city police conducted a dozen special traffic details around Vergennes during which they ticketed 14 drivers and warned another 10.
On March 5 they also stopped a tractor-trailer truck on Monkton Road and ticketed the company for operating a vehicle that was 53,500 pounds overweight for the road. That ticket amounted to $9,362. Police issued a second $220 ticket for failing to obtain a permit to operate an overweight vehicle on the road.
Police on March 5 and 6 also enforced the Vergennes wintertime ban on overnight parking on city streets, ticketing four vehicles each of those nights.
Between March 2 and 8 Vergennes police also:
On March 2 looked into graffiti being painted on a Vergennes wastewater pump house and a building on Canal Street, the second such incident in the area in the past five days. Police took photos of the graffiti at both sites and canvassed the area.
On March 3:
•  Investigated a report from a Vergennes Union Elementary School student that a man had twice attempted to call the student over to him. Police said they could not find the man, who was described as being between 50 and 70 yeas old and wearing a brown jacket and brown pants. They plan follow-up checks in the area during the hours students walk to and from school.
•  Investigated a report from a Main Street resident of what they said was a man’s repeated violations of an abuse prevention order. Police said prosecution is pending.   
•  Arrested Anthony Smith, 23, of Vergennes for failing to appear in court for a driving-under-the-influence charge and operating a vehicle with a criminally suspended license. Police took Smith to the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility, where he paid bail.
On March 4:
•  Cited a Monkton Road juvenile for stealing tobacco products and a laptop from a family member. Police recovered the items and also issued the juvenile a citation for possession of tobacco.
•  Conducted a local background check for a National Guard applicant.
•  Went to Plank Road in Monkton to help Vermont State Police find a woman who had become lost near the former Vergennes Watershed property. State police found her walking along the road.
On March 5:
•  Responded to a report of a vehicle that had rolled across Main Street; police determined the vehicle had not been put in gear and the owner had not uses its parking brake.
•  Helped a motorist get into a locked vehicle on Armory Lane.
On March 6:
•  Responded to a two-vehicle accident on South Water Street.
•  Helped state police process an impaired driver at the Vergennes Police Department.
On March 7:
•  Assisted the South Portland (Maine) Police Department with a fraud investigation involving a local resident. Police said someone had attempted to purchase electronic devices using an old photo, password and PIN numbers, but the purchase was declined.
•  Received a debit card that was found in the area of South Maple Street and contacted its owner.
On March 8 conducted a property watch on two Main Street residences.
