VUHS runners claim four titles in championship

BURLINGTON — The Vergennes Union High School boys’ indoor track team won four events and placed third in Division II at Sunday’s championship meet, hosted by the University of Vermont.
The performances by Coach Brad Castillo’s Commodores represented the program’s best finish at a state meet since 2004, when a larger VUHS team that included field events athletes as well as runners captured second place.
Junior Ben Huston and senior Julio Quiles sparked the team. Huston won at 1,000 meters and ran on the Commodores’ winning 4-by-400 and 4-by-800-meter relay teams.
Quiles won the 300, finished second at 55 meters, and ran on the 4×400 team.
Gabe Praamsma ran on both winning relay teams and placed in the 1,500, Jarret Muzzy placed in two events and ran on the 4×800 team, Erich Reitz took third in the 1,000 and ran on the 4×800 team, and Xander DeBlois was fourth at 300 meters and ran on 4×400 team.
