VERGENNES — Vergennes police between Jan. 13 and 19 continued to ticket vehicles for violating the city’s winter overnight parking ban and for speeding while also dealing with a variety of cases, including scam and threatening complaints, vaping students, vandalism, truancy and gas drive-offs.
During those seven days, Vergennes police:
On Jan. 13:
•  Ticketed two vehicles for violation of the winter parking ban.
•  Responded to a report of a disabled tractor-trailer truck near the Small City Market; it was gone when police arrived.
•  Conducted a traffic patrol on Main and Green streets and issued one ticket.
On Jan. 14:
•  On Armory Lane contacted a driver who had left the New Haven Jiffy Mart without paying for gas, on behalf of Vermont State Police.
•  Helped a motorist get into a locked vehicle on Depot Street.
•  Took a report for insurance purposes of a minor two-vehicle accident in which an unknown driver struck the complainant’s vehicle while it was parked and unoccupied.
On Jan. 15:
•  Ticketed three vehicles during a traffic detail on West Main Street; one ticket issued was to the driver of a commercial vehicle traveling 58 mph in a 30 mph zone.
•  Ticketed a vehicle for violation of the winter parking ban.
•  Responded to a report that a woman had been struck by a truck in the Aubuchon Hardware parking lot; police determined the woman had slipped and fallen.
•  Responded to a report of two Vergennes Union High School students who were acting suspiciously and were in possession of vaping chargers; police found no other vaping equipment, and the school notified parents of the issue.
•  Looked for but did not find a tractor-trailer truck reported to be passing vehicles unsafely on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh and heading into Vergennes.
•  Received a backpack found in the vicinity of South Water Street; police could not determine who owned it, but are holding onto the backpack in hopes it will be claimed.
•  Were told by a local parent that her daughter feels unsafe at school due to the past behavior of a male student. According to police, the parent felt the school was not doing enough to keep the male student away from her daughter. Police suggested the parent consider applying for a relief-from-abuse order against the male, and to bring her concerns again to the school administration.
•  Asked the owner of a vehicle parked and blocking traffic in and out of the City Limits Night Club lot to move it after finding the owner at another business.
•  Responded to a report of an unruly Valley Vista client who was threatening the staff and other clients. Police said they learned the client was homeless when she was asked to leave the facility, and they refused to let her walk back to Burlington, and instead found her a motel room through the John Graham Shelter and took her there.
On Jan. 16:
•  Investigated a report from a VUHS staff member that a truck had been vandalized with spray paint; the incident is under investigation
•  Looked into a report of a truant student at the Vergennes Union Elementary School; police passed on information regarding the student’s truancy at VUES and another school facility and forwarded it to the Addison County State’s Attorney’s Office for action.
•  Responded to an Ice House Court residence to handle a report of a threatening phone message.
On Jan. 17:
•  Identified the driver who left the Small City Market without paying for $26.05 worth of gas; the store owner said he would contact the patron on his own.
•  Received a report from a female on Green Street who said a man had called her and identified himself as a government representative and said she had problems with her bank accounts; police reported the incident to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office.
On Jan. 18:
•  Conducted a welfare check on a King Street resident who had failed to show up for a meeting; the individual was contacted and determined to be fine.
•  Assisted the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad with lifting a patient on Macdonough Drive.
•  Ticketed a vehicle for violation of the winter parking ban and ticketed and towed another.
•  Helped a motorist get into a locked vehicle on South Water Street.
•  Transported an unruly drunken male resident of a North Street residential care facility to the ACT One detoxification facility in Burlington.
On Jan. 19:
•  Heard from a North Street resident his vehicle was towed during the night; police determined the vehicle was towed by the owner of the apartment building next door; police told the man to report the incident to his landlord and to avoid confrontation outside of civil process.
•  Responded to Valley Vista to help deal with a resident who was experiencing emotional difficulties; the resident was calmed and remained at the facility.
