Champs, Marlins make a splash at state meet

THE VERGENNES CHAMPS’ coaches and the team’s under-6, -8 and -10 swimmers on Sunday used Silly String to celebrate the team’s fourth-place finish out of 20 teams at the Vermont Swim Association Championships in White River Junction this past weekend.

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Vergennes Champs and Middlebury Marlins capped their enjoyable summer swim team seasons in style this past weekend at Vermont Swim Association Championship meet, which was held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction.
The Champs scored 1,715 points to become the only team based outside of Chittenden County to crack the top five at the 20-team competition. Coming off a 2018 season in which the Champs won Division II, Vergennes settled for fourth place in Division I, into which the Champs were placed this summer. The Vergennes team were coming off a third-place showing and a 5-2 record in the Champlain Valley Swim League.
The Edge Swim Club (3,787 points) rolled to its fifth straight overall championship, followed in D-I by Burlington Tennis Club (1,976.5), Town of Essex Swim Team (1,941.5), the Champs, and Burlington Country Club (1,531.5).
The smaller Marlins squad was placed in Division III and won that division’s crown with 800 points, with Rutland (702), Bennington (676) and Woodstock (625.5) in its wake.
Younger swimmers sparked both teams. For the Champs, 8-and-under Flint Crary (25 free and 50 free)  and 10-and-under Will Clark (50 back and 50 breast) each picked up two state championships, while Clark finished second twice and Crary earned one runner-up finish. Carlyn Rapoport, racing in the 14-and-under division, also won a title (50 breast) and picked up a second-place finish.
Connor Husk added to the Champ point total with two seconds and two thirds, and other solo contributors included Isabella de la Cruz and Hadley Harris (a second apiece), Lauren Husk (two thirds), and Reese Muzzy (a third). Several Champ relay teams also performed well, notably the 10-and-under boys and 8-and-under girls and boys’ units.
Winning a title apiece for the Marlins were youngsters Mitzi Poduschnick (8-and-under 25 breast) and Paul Foley (6-and-under 25 free). Aurora Foley and Constantin Bellman chipped in with strong efforts in several events, including two seconds and a third apiece. Fraser Milligan and Oliver Poduschnick each chipped in second-place finishes, Poduschnick added a third, and both of them helped the Marlin U-18 boys’ relay teams fare well. Aidan Chance added a third-place effort.
Scoring points for their teams with top-12 individual efforts or top-six relay performances were:
