It's all in a day's work for a Vermont State Police trooper

ADDISON COUNTY — The invitation to ride along with a Vermont State Police trooper got a little intimidating after reading the requisite consent form. The passenger — in this case, a reporter — shouldn’t rule out the possibility of being whisked at a high rate of speed to a crime scene and the risk of injury, and yes, even death.

This scribe swallowed even harder when VSP Sgt. Blake Cushing of the New Haven barracks recommended close scrutiny of the location of the cruiser’s radio in case the trooper were incapacitated and needed backup.

Willowell to celebrate Ethiopian food and music at benefit night for AIDS outreach group

LINCOLN — One Love AIDS HIV Awareness Theater is a theater troupe in Hawassa, Ethiopia, which performs shows about AIDS and gender equality in rural towns in Southern Ethiopia. To raise funds for One Love Theater, the Willowell Foundation will host an evening of  music, dancing, crafts and food at its Ethiopian Boogie Benefit on Saturday, Sept. 30. The party will be held at Burnham Hall, 52 East River Road in Lincoln. The event, which will run from 7-10:30 p.m., features the New Nile Orchestra, billed as “New England’s Finest Ethiopian Funk.”

Ski + Ride expo on tap Oct. 7-8

BURLINGTON — Vermont’s first winter sports show, the VT SKI + RIDE Expo returns to Burlington this year, Oct. 7-8, at its new location — the downtown Hilton.

For the second year, Rotary Club of Burlington will hold the EXPO. VT SKI + RIDE Magazine is sponsoring the event, along with additional support from University of Vermont College of Medicine, Farrell Distributing and Long Trail Brewing.

Pioneering organic wheat grower reflects on the farming life

BRIDPORT — Pioneering organic wheat farmer Ben Gleason is making plans to lay aside his plow. The 73-year-old Bridport resident is working with the Vermont Land Trust to conserve his farm’s 75 acres and conduct a nationwide search for a new farmer interested in Gleason’s farm and flour business.

“I was gonna farm until I died,” said Gleason. Instead he’s decided just to find new owners.

Chicken dinner in New Haven – here's the correct phone number

NEW HAVEN — There will be a Chicken and Biscuit Dinner in New Haven this Sunday, Sept. 10, at New Haven Congregational Church at the top of Town Hill Road.

In Thursday's print edition we published an incorrect phone number to make reservations. We should have printed: call Betsy prior to 7 p.m. at 453-2724 for reservations.

Seatings for dinner will be at noon and 1 p.m.

The charge will be adults $10/children 6-11 $5/under six Free. Take out available. Walk-ins are welcome but reservations are appreciated.

Northlands Job Corps director out after less than a year

VERGENNES — The head of the Northlands Job Corps Center in Vergennes has been replaced after less than a year on the job.

An official of the company that operates the federally funded job training center confirmed in an email to Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley last week that center director Shirma Ferguson has been replaced by an interim director.

Lakeside towns seek power-line tax revenues

MIDDLEBURY — Four Addison County communities have joined a legal effort to compel developers of the proposed New England Clean Power Link (NECPL) to pay municipal property taxes on the entire electric power transmission line — including the segment located on the bed of Lake Champlain off their respective shorelines.

College, Middlebury-area schools form partnership on world study

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College and the Addison Central School District (ACSD) have forged a new partnership through which their respective students will gain knowledge and build career foundations through the International Baccalaureate program.

This past October the ACSD board unanimously agreed to begin a three-year process to become a district of IB World Schools. If successful, the Middlebury-area school district will become one of fewer than 10 IB World Districts in the United States.

Bernie Sanders whips up Middlebury crowd, joins in condemnation of Trump's DACA decision

ST. ALBANS — Leading state officials in Vermont were unanimous in their condemnation of President Donald Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA, created by his predecessor, President Barack Obama.

The program allowed children brought illegally to the U.S. by adult relatives to work and attend school legally, provided they registered with the government. Re-registration was required every two years.
