By John Flowers

WEYBRIDGE — Nothing like spending a sunny afternoon hiking up a mountain. The picnic lunch tastes even better with a panoramic view.

But how about driving four hours to get to the base of a mountain for a hike of more than 4,000 feet to the summit, wading through armpit-high snowdrifts while braving sub-zero temperatures and fierce winds with only a frozen hard-boiled egg to gnaw on for sustenance? How about facing that kind of challenge 115 times on mountains throughout the Northeast — and only during the winter?

VERGENNES — In early March, after nine years of serving items like challah French toast and turkey, bacon and Swiss panini, Vergennes restaurant 3 Squares Café will move about two blocks north from its long-time home at 221 Main St.

The destination is 141 Main St., the former home of Luigi’s Italian Specialties, which about a year ago after a lengthy planning phase decamped for 193 Main St., which once housed the former Hungry Bear Restaurant.

MONKTON — Bearing banners and singing songs, several dozen protesters blocked an expected appraisal Thursday at Monkton resident Claire Broughton’s property, where Vermont Gas Systems is seeking to lay a natural gas pipeline over her objections.

The protesters waited in a cold wind for about an hour before hearing via Broughton’s lawyer that state officials had called off the visit. He said officials deemed the situation too “menacing.”

Vergennes-area ballots see choices only in Ferrisburgh

Posted on January 28, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Few contested races will appear on ballots in Vergennes, Ferrisburgh and Addison, although last-minute interest in seats on the proposed 12-member board to govern all four Addison Northwest Supervisory Union schools could create more contests.

That school board will only be created if the proposed unification measure passes on March 1. Unlike for other offices, the deadline for filing papers for seats on that board is this coming Monday, Feb. 1, not this past Monday, Jan. 25.

MIDDLEBURY — It was around a decade ago that Jeff Weaber began brewing a healthy, fermented beverage called kombucha at his family’s home in Salisbury. It caught on with his friends and neighbors, which inspired him to make a commercial venture out of the drink, made simply from tea, sugar, water, and a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.
