VERGENNES — Vergennes residents this past Tuesday, by a 4-1 margin, backed adding a first-floor room to the Vergennes Opera House’s lease in City Hall.

By a 359-89 tally on May 5, voters gave the Vergennes City Council permission to amend the 2003 lease the Friends of the Vergennes Opera House Inc. signed with the city to include “the so-called ticket booth.” That vote was held in conjunction with the second vote on a Vergennes Union High School budget proposal.

MIDDLEBURY — Longtime English teacher Richard “Doc” Seubert has become part of the commencement tradition at Middlebury Union High School, assisting with graduation rehearsal and Project Graduation.

Next month, he’ll be among those passing on to the next phase of life.

“I’m finally going to be able to graduate,” Seubert said with a broad smile. “And the beat will go on.”

He has certainly earned it, after 44 years as an MUHS educator.

MIDDLEBURY — Michele Forman was three years old when she knew she wanted to be a teacher. She recalled enviously watching her five-year-old sister go to school in the morning. When she came home in the afternoon, big sister would play teacher and Michele would assume the role of student.

“I always wanted to be the teacher,” Forman said.

And wow, did her dream come true.

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Addison County judiciary are warning that a dramatic surge in the number of juvenile cases is stretching court staff to the limit and in some cases deferring the legal process for adult defendants whose cases must, by state law, take a backseat to justice for young victims and defendants.

Voters reject both parts of VUHS multiple choice budget proposal

Posted on May 7, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Tuesday sent two VUHS budget articles down to defeat for the second time in 2015, one by a close margin and one by a landslide.

A $10.31 million proposal to fund the high school, and which cut $156,000 from the budget defeated on Town Meeting Day, lost 722-676 or 51.6-48.4 percent.

A second article, one that could have only taken effect if the first article had passed, would have added that $156,000 back into VUHS spending. It failed by 843-556, or 60-40 percent.

Ferrisburgh backs Central School spending plan on second try

Posted on May 7, 2015 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — In a second 2015 vote on a Ferrisburgh Central School budget, Ferrisburgh voters on Tuesday approved two spending articles totaling $3,592,402 for the 2015-2016 school year. The result will be an increase of about 2 percent over current FCS spending.

Because a second Vergennes Union High School budget proposal was defeated on Tuesday, 722-676, despite support in Ferrisburgh, the tax impact of Tuesday’s vote is difficult to assess.
