Community rallies after dad dies

ADDISON COUNTY — When Starksboro’s Jonah Rule proposed to his wife Caitlin, it was no surprise to his mother Ann.

Rule’s mother still recalls the first time she saw her daughter-in-law. At that time, Caitlin Rule was a 15-year-old Middlebury Union High School student.

Local option tax receipts continue to grow

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury’s local option tax continues to exceed revenue expectations, leaving town officials confident the 1-percent levy on rooms, meals, sales and alcohol will generate more than adequate dollars to pay down the community’s share of the new Cross Street Bridge.

Middlebury Community House gains $200K boost in land sale

MIDDLEBURY — The 196-year-old Middlebury Community House — which is maintained on behalf of local residents by a longstanding trust — is entering a new era with a smaller property footprint, more financial stability and a plan to better showcase itself to Addison County — thanks in part to the ongoing Middlebury Fire Department project.

Built in 1816 beside the Congregational Church of Middlebury at the head of Main Street, the Middlebury Community House remains one of the best examples of post-colonial, Federal-style architecture left in town.

Bristol chase ends in crash

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police arrested a Leicester man Thursday night on multiple charges after he allegedly stole a car in Bristol and led police on a chase along Route 17 before crashing the vehicle into a utility pole.

It was at around 10:12 p.m. last night that police received a call from Bristol resident Christopher Dion stating his car had been stolen from his garage and was last seen traveling west on Route 17 toward Bristol village.

Crowds mark Monkton's 250th birthday with food, fun and laughter

MONKTON — The Monkton 250th Founding Celebration on June 24 was a day of fun, food and laughter. Starting the day of celebration was the 5K Race with 70 runners and walkers. Prizes were given for the fastest time of male and female contestants, the winners being Chris Coffey with a time of 18:35 minutes and Lizzie Collins with a time of 21:35 minutes. The race was sponsored by Road ID. Each contestant received a water bottle. Awards were given at the end of the race on the ball field at Morse Park.

New law takes teeth out of constables' job

BRANDON — George “Gigi” Corsones has been a fixture in Brandon, directing traffic on the bank corner and a perennial choice for constable since 1996. But as of July 1, the duties of the 85-year-old and many other town constables statewide without the proper training will be limited.

Middlebury woman has plans for Burlington College

MIDDLEBURY –– Burlington College is looking to expand by 50 percent, and the college has chosen a Middlebury resident to lead the effort as its new president.

“My plan and wish is to grow the college to 300 students within three years, which is a 50 percent increase and an ambitious goal, but we have the space and very unique programs,” said Christine Plunkett.

Two-cent city tax hike first since 2008

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday approved the first increase in the municipal portion of the city tax rate since 2008, a 2-cent hike that will bring it to about 62.3 cents for the 2012-2013 fiscal year that begins on July 1.

Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials and City Manager Mel Hawley expect the city’s residential school rate to drop by a little bit less than a penny, meaning the overall residential property rate in Vergennes should rise by a little more than a penny.

Middlebury's tax rate inches upward

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday voted unanimously to set the fiscal year 2013 municipal tax rate at 86.36 cents per $100 in property value for residential and non-residential taxpayers, an increase of around 2.6 cents compared to the current rate of 83.75 cents.
